Yesterday the conditions were perfect for our 4WD trip through Eskhead and Lake Taylor Stations, with dry tracks, limited dust and low river levels. 100 vehicles drove the route through Eskhead Station first crossing the North Esk River and climbing up to the open flats with Beech forest on the slopes of the Studleigh Range clothing its edge, then descending into the valley of the North Branch of the Hurunui River. After crossing the river, the convoy made its way up on to the terraces of Lake Taylor Station above the river, threading its way through matagouri to a superb lunch spot overlooking Lake Mason. After a relaxed time having lunch and exploring the area, the convoy then headed back down to the river to skirt along the base of the Woolshed range, climbing up through the bush to the saddle between the Woolshed and Orinoco Ranges, to finally descend with great views of Lake Taylor to its edge, and the drive’s end.
We greatly appreciate the generosity of the owners of both stations for their permission to travel through their properties and spend time taking in the awesome environment that is their domain and under their careful custody. This would have been a revelation for many of our drivers and passengers. We also greatly thank those registered for our event as their contribution will provide much support for local groups and individuals.
This environment is at our back door, and we enjoy the opportunity to share this with others who would normally not get access. There will be more opportunities, and we will continue to offer more 4WD events in this environmentally gifted region.
